What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is defined as any dental or oral problem that needs immediate treatment from a professional to save your tooth, stop your gum tissue from bleeding, or relieve severe pain. It could be caused by an accident, malfunctions with your dental work (like dentures or crowns), or poor oral hygiene. Call our Cincinnati dentist for emergency treatment if you have:

  • Severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swollen gums
  • Broken tooth
  • Knocked-out permanent tooth
  • Injury or trauma to your jaw
  • Gum or tooth infections
  • Abscessed tooth
  • Excessive bleeding of your gums

If you're unsure whether your dental issue qualifies as an emergency, give us a call and explain your symptoms. Our friendly team will tell you if you need to come in for an appointment to protect your oral health.

Why You Should Seek Emergency Dental Treatment Right Away

It's important to seek treatment for a dental emergency as soon as possible for two reasons. First, the sooner you see a dentist, the greater the chance of saving an injured tooth. Second, delaying treatment can increase the risk of infection and further complicate the problems.

For example, a toothache could be caused by something as simple as food caught between your teeth. However, it could also be a sign of a serious infection such as an abscessed tooth—a condition in which bacteria have infected the center of the tooth. An abscess needs to be treated immediately to prevent more serious medical complications.

First Aid Tips for Common Dental Emergencies

At some point, most people will experience a dental emergency even if you have very good oral hygiene. Whether it's a lost filling, a chipped tooth, or something more serious, you should know what to do to minimize the damage.

➤ Knocked-Out Tooth: Pick up your tooth by the crown, not the root. If the root is dirty, gently rinse it off with water. Do not scrub the tooth clean or try to remove any attached gum tissue. Stick the tooth back in the empty socket if possible. If you can't, put the tooth in a small container of milk and bring it to your emergency appointment.

➤ Chipped or Broken Tooth: Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to dislodge any tooth fragments. If you have facial swelling, apply cold compresses to the outside of your cheek. If you're bleeding, apply gauze to the area and bite down gently.

Lost Crown: If you have a lost crown, try to find it and put it back in place using denture adhesive to protect your remaining natural tooth. If you can't find the crown or if it's broken, let us know when you come to your emergency appointment.

Lost Filling: Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to remove any food particles that might be stuck in the area where the filling was lost. Apply cold compresses to reduce any pain or swelling.

➤ Severe Toothache: Rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution using 1 tsp of salt to 8 oz of water. Apply cold compresses for pain or swelling. You can try an over-the-counter pain medication, but do not place an aspirin directly on your gums because it can burn them.

➤ Excessively Bleeding Gums: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use gauze or a clean cloth to apply pressure to the area where your gums are bleeding. After about 10 minutes, check to see if the bleeding has stopped; if not, continue applying pressure for another 10 minutes or so until it does stop.
